The nose here is brilliantly red fruited, with layer upon layer of subtle spice, bright floral notes, herbs, and stone. Its not all poetry and pageantry, though, and my first impression of the wine was simply, “oh that’s goooood.” A fair assessment, and sometimes that it all one requires. Further tastes show fine tannin throughout, a juicy, vibrant mouthfeel that is very likeable, and deft, long-developing layers of fruit that reveal themselves severally. I really loved this wine at cellar temperature.

Ah, 10 Acre. The Chambolle-Musigny of the West. Always the most graceful expression of Patton Valley, with wild red fruit on the nose like Rainier cherry, and Hood strawberries (the taste of the mountains!), and fresh pine. The palate is fine layers of fruit, dusty tannin, nervy acidity, and fresh herbs throughout, lingering for an age. Easily, will steadily improve for the next decade.

The 2017 West Block plays exactly to type. Our more muscular and brooding vineyard expression (think Tom Hardy as Hamlet), this version has a nose replete with purple fruit, autumn spices, and dried flowers, with a vein of sandalwood or something exotic. The palate is firm with tannin, but also nimble enough to hit a backhand on the run. Layered, and textured, one will find nuance to explore for an easy 12 years.
