2018 ESTATE PINOT NOIR
Dark cherry pops from the nose at once, and is lifted with baking spice, and pie crust. The wine opens into something with violet, rose, and soft spices, that brings you back out of October’s mists. The palate is lively and bright, but pleasantly broad with juicy and fine tannin throughout, and sprightly red fruit like pomegranate and raspberry playing with their old friend’s cocoa powder, freshly plowed earth, and cedar.
2018 10 ACRE PINOT NOIR
Possibly our most aromatic 10 Acre ever, the nose is explosive with bright red fruit, rose petal, bing cherry, strawberry, and dusty currant throughout. It is a wild, yet restrained nose that has complexity, vibrancy, and nuance. The palate is soft but persistent. Tannin pushes and pulls from front to back and both sides, but pleasantly so, providing a supportive and elegant structure that doesn’t overwhelm. Red cherry, violet, and young blackberries skitter about, and a wash of creme brûlée splashes on the finish. This wine is a real stunner. Slow developing, despite the impressive aromatics on the open, it has extended charms that suggest this will be a long-player, and can be enjoyed for the next 2-8 years.
2018 WEST BLOCK PINOT NOIR
This West Block has all of the hallmarks of our west-facing blocks in a sunny but not completely hot year, punctuated by spice, moderately firm structure, and an angular finish that seems to beg the question, “Just how long will this last?” Because it seems like maybe forever. The nose jumps with cinnamon, clove, dark red fruit, blue fruits, and a kind of Dr. Pepper soupçon. A very good start. The palate is dense, and it seems like it is holding something back upon the open, but the character slowly reveals itself. It is spicy, soft, rich and exceedingly pleasant. A graham cracker crust cherry pie comes to mind with creme Chantilly, and a dusting of cocoa powder as the wine continues is progression. The crisp, angular finish shows a flash of acid and tannin working together to preserve this gem. They’ll keep up the good fight for another 8 years, but I’d for sure try this now to get a sense of it.
